Attacks on smart home devices are on the rise. More than 1.5 billion smart device attacks occurred, with attackers primarily looking to steal data or use compromised devices for future breaches and cryptocurrency mining.

IoT devices are frequently less secure than laptops or smartphones and thus easier to compromise. They may be less frequently updated, making them vulnerable to well-known exploits. Users may also fail to notice unusual activity from an IoT device, allowing hackers to use it as part of a botnet or to launch additional attacks.

Simultaneously, the number of smart home devices is rapidly increasing. Smart refrigerators, lightbulbs, coffee makers, and washing machines are among the IoT appliances available to consumers. The smart home device market is rapidly expanding, making it an attractive target for hackers.

As a result, smart home technology has become a popular target for hackers looking for devices to stage an attack or break into otherwise secure networks.

1- Turn off Bluetooth when you are not using it

You risk allowing unauthorized devices to connect and use your data if you leave your device’s Bluetooth on all the time. When not in use, always turn off your device’s Bluetooth.

2- Update the Device Software Frequently

One of the most effective ways to protect your data and device is to keep its software as up-to-date as possible.

3- Turn off Discoverable Mode

Your phone or laptop must be in discoverable mode in order to communicate with another device.

4- Always Lock Down Device Settings

When you first connect your device and grant it access, make sure to immediately lock it down by setting a password for your connection. This ensures that no one else can use your connection or steal any of your data.

5- Use Antivirus Programs

Antivirus software isn’t always designed to prevent Bluetooth attacks, but it can detect when a device is infected.
